Most of these are master studies after well-known painters; a number are after photo reference. Studies from photo references are already a very different challenge, as Chinese painting works through an elaborate symbolic language, into which 'reality' has to be translated. I consider myself a beginner, so my focus is on learning; still, there are some original works in the second section. Photographing these paintings is difficult: non-uniform lighting is very visible, and they're pretty big. This is my best effort with limited means.

Glitching experiments

Albums

I collaborated on some albums for which I thought Chinese painting would be a great medium — those are original creations mixing traditional and digital techniques.

Mounting/Marouflage/Zhuangbiao

A painting on rice paper does not look very good on its own. Colors are washed out, and the paper is all crumpled. To finish it, it must be glued on another sheet of paper (or another durable support). This process is a bit technical and can destroy the whole painting if not done skillfully. The second example shows pictures taken in the same conditions, illustrating the stark contrast.

Each mounted painting is the tip of the iceberg — below it is a mountain of drafts and half-finished work, slowly accreting into poorly mixed metaphors.
